Tomato thokku/ Thakkali thokku/ Side dish for idli,dosa and roti/ Chutney recipes

Simple and yummy thokku/chutney prepared with tomato, garlic and other spices. It goes well with idli, dosa,and roti too.


Ingredients:
Serves 3 to 4
  • 2 big – Tomato(chopped)
  • 1 big – Onion (chopped)
  • 4 to5 cloves – Garlic (chopped)
  • 1/4 tsp – Turmeric powder
  • 1 to 2 tsp – Red chilli powder
  • 1/8 tsp – Sugar
  • 2 tbsp – Coriander leaves chopped
  • 1/8 tsp – Asafoetida/Hing
  • Fresh curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
Seasonings:
  • 1 to 2 tbsp – Sesame oil
  • 1/4 tsp – Mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp – Split black gram/Ulunthu
  • 1 or 2 no’s – Dry red chilies

Preparation method:
  1. Heat oil in a pan, season it with mustard seeds,urad dal and dry red chilies. Followed by garlic and curry leaves, saute until garlic change its color to golden brown.
  2. Now add chopped onion along with little salt, cover and cook until onion turns slightly brown in color.
  3. Followed by tomato, cook until they are mushy. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, sugar,asafoetida/hing,salt to taste, mix well thoroughly until the raw smell of masala goes away.
  4. Add water between 1 to 1 1/2 cup and mix well. Bring it to boil and continue to cook until you reach the desired consistency.Finally garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with idli, dosa and roti.

Notes:
  • Do not make it too watery as it will not only affect the consistency but also the taste.
  • You may add red chilli powder as per your spice level.
  • Sugar helps to balance the sourness from the tomato.
