Kulukki sarbath / Kerala special Kulukki sarbath - with video

Kulukki sarbath is one of the popular sarbath or drink from Kerala state, especially Cochin. It is a sweet and spicy lemonade prepared with nannari syrup, green chilli, ginger, basil seeds and lemon juice. In Malayalam, the word Kulukki means shaken and sarbath means juice, so it is called Kulukki sarbath.

Ingredients
Serves 2

      • 3 tbsp - Nannari syrup
      • 1 tsp - Ginger chopped
      • 1 no - Green chilli (slit open or chopped finely)
      • 1 tsp - Basil seeds / sabja seeds (soak in enough water)
      • 1/2 no - Lemon (squeeze juice)
      • 2 to 3 tbsp - Sugar (or add as needed)
      • 1 pinch - Salt
      • 2 cups – Water (or add as needed)
      • 1/2 cup - Ice cubes

Preparation method:

  1. Soak basil seeds / sabja seeds in 1/4 cup of water for 15 to 20 minutes or until well soaked.
  2. Take a mason jar, or cocktail shaker or any bottle with lid, add chopped ginger, green chilli, soaked basil seeds,sugar, salt, lemon juice, nannari sarbath, ice cubes and finally water.
  3. Close the lid and shake vigorously until the sugar dissolves completely. Approximately 15 to 20 seconds. Serve immediately.

Notes:
  • You may increase or decrease the quantity of sugar as per your sweetness.
  • You may chop or slit open green chillies, you may decide based on your family needs.
  • I have used 1/2 lemon juice, that was more than enough for me. If you wish you may add more to your taste buds.
