Dal khichdi / Mixed dal khichdi / paruppu sadam/Rice varieties/Recipe with video

Simple and easy one pot meal prepared with rice and dal, that goes well with any raita and papad. It goes well with potato fry also


Ingredients:
Serves 4 to 5
  • 1 cup – Raw rice
  • 1/4 cup – Moong dal / Paasi paruppu
  • 1/4 cup – Masoor dal / Mysore paruppu
  • 1/4 tsp – Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp – Sesame oil
  • Salt to taste
For seasonings:
  • 1 tbsp – Oil
  • 1 tbsp – Ghee
  • 1/8 tsp – Asafoetida
  • 1/2 tsp – Jeera / cumin seeds
  • 1 medium – Onion (chopped)
  • 1 no – Tomato
  • 3 to 4 clove – Garlic (chopped)
  • 1/4 tsp – Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp – Red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp – Coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp – Garam masala powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp - Ghee
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing

Preparation method:
  1. Wash and soak rice and dal for 30 minutes. Pressure cook rice, dal along with turmeric powder, sesame oil and salt to taste. Rice and water ratio is 1 :21/2, totally I added 4 1/2 cup water. Set it aside.
  2. Heat oil and ghee in pan, season it with jeera and asafoetida. Followed by chopped onion and garlic along with salt, saute for 2 to 3 minutes. Add chopped tomato and cook till they are mushy.
  3. Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder /sambar powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder, saute until the raw smell of masala goes.
  4. Add 1/2 to 1 cup of water and bring it to boil. Add the cooked rice and mix well thoroughly . Check for salt and add if needed. Finally add ghee and garnish with coriander leaves, serve with raita and papad.


Notes:
  • You may increase or decrease the quantity of red chili powder as per your spice level.
  • You may mix any dal / paruppu/lentils of your choice like toor dal etc.
