Ingredients:

  • 1 cup raw rice
  • 1/3 cup paasi paruppu (moong dal)
  • 1 ½ cups jaggery powder
  • ½ cup grated coconut
  • ¼ tsp cardamom powder
  • 2 tbsp ghee (plus extra for greasing)
  • 3 cups water
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Wash and soak raw rice and moong dal for 1 hour. Drain completely.
  2. Dry them in shade until the outer layer is dry but inside still holds moisture.
  3. Dry roast rice and dal for 5 minutes on low–medium flame. Let cool.
  4. Grind coarsely using pulse mode.
  5. Heat 3 cups water with a pinch of salt. When bubbles appear, add the rice–dal powder. Stir well.
  6. Cover and cook 5–7 minutes, stirring in between, until soft and cooked.
  7. Add jaggery, cardamom powder, grated coconut, and ghee. Mix well.
  8. Cook until mixture leaves the pan and comes together like a ball.
  9. Grease your hands with ghee. While warm, shape lemon-sized balls or use a mothagam mold.
  10. Steam in a idli plate or steamer for 10 minutes.
  11. Cool slightly and enjoy this traditional Pillaiyarpatti Mothagam.
