Sweet Potato Masala

Sweet potato masala, a simple masala prepared with sweet potato,spices and coconut, that goes well with rice.

Serves 3 to 4
  • 2 medium – Sweet potatoes
  • 1 no – Onion (chopped)
  • 1/4 tsp – Turmeric powder
  • 1 to 2 tsp – Red chili powder (or add as needed)
  • Pinches of salt
  • 2 to 3 tbsp – Coconut grated
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp – Oil
  • 1/4 tsp – Mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp – Split black gram/urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp – Cumin seeds/jeera
  • Fresh curry leaves
  • Pinches of asafoetida

Preparation method:
  1. Wash, peel and chop sweet potatoes into slightly big cubes. Transfer it to a cooking pan, add onion,salt,turmeric powder, red chili powder, mix well thoroughly.
  2. Add enough water (just cover the sweet potatoes), cover with a lid and cook until sweet potatoes are soft.
  3. Meanwhile, heat oil in a pan, season it with items given in the list for seasoning. Pour this mixture over the cooked sweet potatoes.
  4. Add sugar and continue to cook until the excess water evaporates. Finally add grated coconut and mix well for few minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

  • You may increase or decrease the amount of red chili powder as per your spice level.
  • Adding pinch of sugar gives a nice punch to the masala.
