The Scarborough Bluffs are a natural formation along the eastern shoreline of Lake Ontario in Toronto. These majestic cliffs stretch about 15 km and rise up to 90 meters (300 feet) high.

They were formed over 12,000 years ago during the last Ice Age, when glaciers shaped the land and left behind layers of sand, clay, and gravel. Over time, wind, rain, and lake erosion carved the steep cliffs we see today.

The Bluffs were named “Scarborough” in the late 1790s by Elizabeth Simcoe, wife of Upper Canada’s first lieutenant governor, because the cliffs reminded her of the white limestone cliffs in Scarborough, England.

Today, the Scarborough Bluffs are a popular spot for sightseeing, photography, and nature walks — a beautiful reminder of Toronto’s ancient geological past.
