After enjoying a wonderful day at Grand Bend Beach and the Lambton Heritage Museum, we continued our Southwestern Ontario road trip to Sarnia, a beautiful waterfront city located on the banks of the St. Clair River.
Just an hour's drive from Grand Bend, Sarnia surprised us with its peaceful atmosphere, stunning waterfront, friendly people, and breathtaking sunset views.
Drive from Grand Bend to Sarnia
The drive from Grand Bend to Sarnia takes approximately one hour and is scenic and relaxing. As you approach Sarnia, you'll notice the impressive Blue Water Bridge, which connects Sarnia, Ontario, with Port Huron, Michigan, USA. Every day, thousands of vehicles cross this international bridge, making it one of Canada's busiest border crossings.
Our Stay at Comfort Inn Sarnia
We stayed at the Comfort Inn Sarnia, which had recently been renovated. The rooms were clean, modern, and comfortable, and the staff were welcoming and friendly. The hotel was reasonably priced and included a complimentary breakfast, making it an excellent choice for families and road trippers visiting Sarnia.
Blue Water Bridge Park
After checking into our hotel, we headed to Blue Water Bridge Park, one of Sarnia's most popular attractions.
Located along the beautiful St. Clair River, the park offers spectacular views of the Blue Water Bridge and the international shipping channel. The waterfront trail is perfect for walking, cycling, or simply relaxing while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
The park is exceptionally clean and well maintained, with plenty of benches, picnic areas, and open green spaces.
The Famous Rock Snake
One of the highlights of the park is the colorful Rock Snake.
This community art project began with just a few painted rocks and has grown into a long snake made from thousands of individually decorated stones. Visitors continue adding painted rocks, making it an ever-growing symbol of creativity, kindness, and community spirit.
It's a fun attraction for both children and adults and makes for wonderful photos.
Watching Ships on the St. Clair River
While walking along the waterfront, we were fortunate to see a massive cargo ship sailing through the St. Clair River.
The river is part of the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Seaway, one of the world's busiest inland shipping routes. Large vessels transport grain, iron ore, limestone, steel, and other cargo between ports in Canada and the United States.
Watching these enormous ships glide quietly through the river is a unique experience and one of the highlights of visiting Sarnia.
A Stunning Sunset at Blue Water Bridge
As evening approached, we found a perfect spot to watch the sunset.
The sky transformed into beautiful shades of blue, golden yellow, orange, pink, and purple. Every few minutes, the colors changed, creating one of the most spectacular sunsets we've ever witnessed.
The illuminated Blue Water Bridge after sunset was equally breathtaking, with its lights reflecting beautifully on the calm waters of the St. Clair River.
Ice Cream by the Waterfront
After our walk, we treated ourselves to ice cream from a popular local shop near the park.
Although there was a long lineup, the delicious ice cream made the wait worthwhile. Enjoying ice cream while watching the river and sunset was the perfect way to spend a summer evening.
Dinner at Malabar Indian Cuisine
For dinner, we visited Malabar Indian Cuisine in Sarnia.
The restaurant offered a warm atmosphere and excellent service. We especially enjoyed the crispy dosas, which reminded us of home. If you're looking for authentic South Indian food in Sarnia, this restaurant is definitely worth visiting.
Centennial Park
Before returning to our hotel, we stopped at Centennial Park to see the illuminated Sarnia sign.
Located along the waterfront, the park features walking paths, beautiful gardens, picnic areas, and panoramic views of the river. It's a popular gathering place for both residents and visitors.
Complimentary Breakfast
The next morning, we enjoyed the complimentary breakfast at our hotel.
One of our favorite parts was making fresh waffles. The breakfast included a variety of hot and cold options, making it a great start to another day of exploring Ontario.
Friendly People Make Every Trip Special
Before leaving Sarnia, we visited Centennial Park once more and stopped by one of my husband's colleague's home.
During our morning walk, we met several friendly local residents. Many seniors were enjoying coffee together while chatting in the park, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that made our visit even more memorable.
It's often the people you meet that make a destination truly special, and Sarnia certainly left that impression on us.
Why You Should Visit Sarnia
Sarnia may not always be the first destination people think of when planning an Ontario vacation, but it has so much to offer.
Whether you're looking for scenic waterfront views, relaxing walking trails, beautiful sunsets, family-friendly parks, fascinating international shipping, or simply a peaceful weekend getaway, Sarnia is a destination worth exploring.
Our Next Destination: Point Pelee National Park
After a wonderful stay in Sarnia, we continued our road trip to Point Pelee National Park, Canada's southernmost national park, famous for its marshes, bird migration, beaches, and the iconic Tip where Lake Erie meets the horizon.
Stay tuned for our next travel blog and YouTube video as we explore one of Ontario's most beautiful national parks.
